Issuing of Certificates

A certificate is issued to a person who sat the PSLE, JCE and BGCSE examination of Botswana Examinations Council, within 6 months of release of examinations. At the release of the certificates, BEC sends all school certificate  to the respective centers and expects the schools to issue them to the candidates within (2) years. If not claimed after (2) years, the certificates are to be returned back to BEC. At the same time, BEC sends certificate to private candidates to the addresses they supplied.

Returned Certificates form the Schools or Post

The conditions for issuance of the returned certificates are as follows:

Clients whose Certificate is less than 5 years old 

 
  • Identity card as proof of identity for citizens
  • Passport as proof of identity for non citizens
  • Clients to bring along a clearance letter from the school
 

Clients whose Original Certificate is more than 5 years old 


  • Identity card as proof of identity for citizens
  • Passport as proof of identity for non citizens
An original certificate is issued for free
 

When Names On Identity Card are different from the names on the Certificate

  • Applicants are expected to produce an affidavit to proof the difference names. Clients may collect the affidavit form from BEC and make an oath in front of a commissioner of oath (e.g. police officers), who will append a signature and put an official stamp.
 

When Surname On Identity Card is different from the one on the Certificate

  • Applicants expected to bring a certified copy of marriage certificate if married
  • Applicants should produce letter from  Home Affairs/ Chief as proof of change of surname if the applicant's surname has changed due to any other reasons except if the applicant is married 

When a person other the owner of the Certificate makes a request 

  • Applicant is expected to produce an authorization letter from the owner of the certificate to collect their certificate on their behalf 

Correcting a Certificate

A certificate issued to a customer can only be corrected within 12 months of issue. The conditions of correction of the certificate are as follows:
 
  • A letter of authorization from the school for the school candidate
  • A copy of an identity card for proof of identity for private candidates
  • Payment of the replacement certificate at the prevailing prices
  • The original certificate should be returned before a replacement is applied for
