2012 BGCSE Results Released

Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) wishes to announce the release of the 2012 Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) results. A total number of 31,665 candidates sat for the examinations compared to 28,702 in 2011. Out of the 31,665 candidates who sat for the 2012 examinations, 23,158 were from Government and Government-Aided schools compared to 21,240 in 2011. Private schools presented 3,116 candidates compared to 1,868 in 2011. There were 5,391 private candidates compared to 5,594 in 2011.

Overall performance in the 2012 BGCSE Examinations

  • ·         The total number of grades awarded (for all syllabuses and all candidates) is 204,050 compared to 211,618 in 2011.
  • ·         Out of these 5,802 (0.03%) were grades A and A*.
  • ·         The number of grades issued in 2012 that are C or better is 65,798 (32.3%) compared to 65,303 (30.90%) in 2011. This shows an increase of 1.4%.
  • ·         The percentage of candidates awarded 5 C’s or better is 25.40% compared to 28.72% in 2011, showing a decline of 3.18%.

 

Performance at subject level

  • ·         The results show that there is significant improvement in performance in Home Management, Music and Fashion & Fabrics.
  • ·         Generally, there is a decline in performance across the rest of the subjects.
  • ·         On the basis of 5 C’s or better, females performed better than males. However, female candidates continue to outperform male candidates in Humanities and Languages while in Mathematics, Sciences and Creative and Vocational subjects male candidates outperformed female candidates.

 

Two candidates were disqualified for examination malpractice while the results of 54 candidates have been withheld pending completion of investigations.


Accessing the results

Candidates can access their results through the SMS technology, BEC Website and from their schools.

To access results through SMS, please do the following:

  1. 1.    Include a space between the word “BGCSE” and your Centre Number; also add a space between the Centre Number and Student Number.
  1. 2.    The Center Number must be 5 characters long and the Student Number must be 4 digits long. So if either of these numbers does not meet these requirements please append leading zeros to make it to meet the requirements.

 

For example:

If your Centre Number is BW0812 and your Student Number is 0001 type:  BGCSE   BW812   0001    

 

If your Centre Number is BW001 and your Student Number is 012 type:    BGCSE   BW001 0012

To access results through the BEC Website (www.bec.co.bw), please do the following;

 

  1. 1. Open the BEC website by typing http://www.bec.co.bw in your web browser.

 

  1. 2. Click on the “results” tab on the navigator bar.  (The navigator bar is the  bar that starts with the “home” tab, and also has the “About BEC” tab, “Qualifications” tab, and other tabs”)

 

  1. 3. In the “Examination” drop down combo box, select the Examination (in this case select BGCSE)

 

  1. 4. In the “Year” textbox type the year (In this case type 2012)

 

  1. 5. In the “Centre Number” textbox type your school’s Centre Number. The center number should be 5 characters beginning with the letters “BW” and the “BW” must be in capital letters. For example, if your school’s center number is 812, type BW812, if your school’s center number is 001, type BW001.

 

  1. 6. In the “Candidate Id” textbox type your Candidate Number. The candidate number should have no leading zeros. For example if your candidate number is 0001 then type 1. If your candidate number is 0010 type 10, if your candidate number is 0156, type 156.

 

  1. 7. Click the “Show Results” button. This should display your results indicating the Exam cycle, Year, Centre Number, Subjects and Grades.

Note:

  • ·         The data entry formats for the Website and the SMS are different
  • ·         Candidates should ensure that both their center number and student number are correct
  • ·         Candidates should make sure that all the subjects they have been registered for are included in the SMS response
  • ·         Results can be queried within 6 weeks of their release
  • ·         Q means that the results are pending
  • ·         X means did not meet requirements

 

The results cannot be obtained in person or by telephone from the Botswana Examinations Council.  School candidates should contact their respective School Heads for their results.  Private Candidates who registered with BEC will receive their results through the post.
